A small fishing boat made it's way into Barry Harbour en route to Hayes slipway (to recover), as they were unable to proceed due to a "Heavy Swell". Barry Coastguard were tasked to assist, by transporting the owner to his vehicle (at Hayes slipway) and allowing access to the Barry Yacht Club slipway for recovery.

Report of people fishing in dangerous, windy conditions on Friars Point, Barry Island. Barry Coastguard were tasked to investigate, and found that waves were crashing over the headland, with the potential to knock someone into the sea. Four fishermen were advised to leave the area, but chose to ignore the advice, as they were in the final day of a competition ! Barry Coastguard remained on scene until dark.

Report from the Police of a suicidal female on a Barry Beach. Barry Coastguard and Barry Dock Lifeboat were tasked to assist, but were stood down before arriving on scene.

Report of a sinking 20ft Catamaran at Rhoose Point. Barry Dock Lifeboat took the vessel under tow, and Atlantic College ILB checked the vessel for possible casualties, but nobody was on board. The catamaran was towed to Atlantic College boat house, at St Donat's, where the vessel was searched. Police attended the scene, and paperwork from the vessel was handed over. Report from a member of the public of a swimmer in difficulty, last seen at Whitmore Bay, Barry Island. Report of two persons (a 7 year old boy and his mother) stuck on a bank of earth (cliff) at Porthkerry Beach, Golden Steps (locally known as Clay Mountain). Barry Coastguard were tasked and recovered the casualties by lowering an officer to the casualties and assisting them back to the top of the cliff. Both were recovered safe and well.

Report of a red flare sighted by numerous sources off Friars Point, Barry Island. Barry Coastguard and Barry Dock Lifeboat searched the area, finding that the flare was launched inland, from the Barry Island car park area.

Report of a person in difficulty in the water at Cold Knap Point in imminent danger of being swept out to sea by tidal currents. Barry Coastguard and Barry Dock lifeboat were tasked to attend the area and begin a search for the swimmer. The casualty (a 14 year old boy) was recovered by the lifeboat, safe and well and returned to the lifeboat station, to be returned home to his family by Barry Coastguard. The boy said he was trying to swim to the South Cardinal Buoy off knap point with his friends, but got into difficulty when caught by the currents.

Report from a member of the public of a swimmer off Fontygary Caravan Park, making very slow progress. Barry Coastguard were tasked, but discovered that the swimmer was in fact a lifeguard practicing for a long distance swim. Details taken.

Report of an inflatable boat in difficulties at Whitmore Bay, Barry Island. Barry Coastguard and Barry Dock Lifeboat attended, to find a small inflatable, with at 2.5hp engine, that had run out of petrol. Lifeguards brought the boat ashore, while the Lifeboat and Coastguard observed. Safety Advice was provided by Barry Coastguard.

Report of a male in difficulty on an inflatable rubber ring, at Whitmore Bay, Barry Island. Barry Coastguard and Barry Dock Life Boat attended, as the gentleman was towed back to shore by a lifeguard. Advice was provided by Barry Coastguard, on the dangers of drinking alcohol before entering the sea.

Report of a person in the water at Hayes Slipway. Barry Coastguard were tasked (while on patrol) to investigate the incident. On arrival it was found that a 16 year old autistic boy from Beechwood College, Sully, had absconded and swam to a moored speed boat close to the shore line. He came to shore as we arrived, but proceeded along the beach towards Sully Island. There was immediate concern for the Boys safety, and he was observed by Coastguard, Barry Dock Lifeboat, and Police, for "two hours", before being persuaded to return to Beechwood College by care workers. This is the same boy that was involved in incident 15 (below)

Report of a man-over-board from a vessel near Breaksea Light ship. Recovered by Rescue Helicopter 169 (from RAF Chivenor). Barry Coastguard were tasked to assist Penarth Coastguard in setting up a helicopter landing site at Blackwier (Cardiff).

While on Mud Training exercise, received a call from Swansea to assist the Police at Friars Point, Barry Island, in finding a missing person. Barry Coastguard were tasked to search between Whitmore Bay and the Old Harbour, but the person was found by police on Friars Point as we arrived.

Report of two missing girls (ages 9 & 10), last seen in the water at Whitmore Bay, Barry Island, playing with a rubber ring. Barry Coastguard were tasked to search the area. The girls were last seen 40mins prior to Barry Coastguard arriving, but were found within 10mins, safe and well, playing on the Beach.

18ft Vessel aground at Whitmore Bay, Barry Island, with a flat battery. Restarted with assistance from Barry Coastguard and continued it's passage to Weston-super-mare.

Report of an overdue fishing boat, with two persons on board, launched in the Barry area, fishing at Nash Point. Barry Coastguard conducted a search of all slipways and vantage point from Sully to Gileston Beach, but neither the vessel or towing vehicle were located. Llantwit Major Coastguard also conducted a search of their area.

Report of a dog trapped down the cliff at Nells Point, Barry Island. Barry Coastguard were tasked, and located the dog, Rosie (a spaniel-pointer cross), trapped 4ft down an open manhole, in undergrowth on the cliff top. Rosie was rescued, and returned to her owner, unhurt.

Report (via 999 calls x5) of a person miles south of Whitmore Bay beach in an inflatable dinghy. Barry Coastguard and Barry Dock lifeboat were tasked to investigate. Barry Coastguard located the casualty, who was recovered by the lifeboat, and taken back to the pier head, to be met by the police, who took him home to Cardiff.

Report (via 999 call) of a capsized boat off Knap Beach. Barry Coastguard were tasked to investigate, requesting the launch of Barry Dock lifeboat. The lifeboat towed the vessel, an 8ft rowing boat, back into Barry Harbour.

Report from Swansea Coastguard of two persons from Blackwood, who had caught a train to Barry Island intent on launching an inflatable dinghy, but had not returned home that evening. Barry Coastguard were tasked to search for the dinghy between Hayes slipway and Rhoose Point. Nothing found.

While on patrol, Barry Coastguard were requested to support the Police in finding a missing 64 year old, with chronic asthma/angina. Barry Coastguard attended scene. Person located safe and well within 40mins.

Report of an autistic 16 year old boy stuck 10m up the cliff at Bulls Nose, Porthkerry, following a day trip with his carers, from Beechwood College, Sully. Barry Coastguard were tasked to assess the situation, finding that the boy was happy to stay where he was, making a rescue extremely difficult. On scene were, Barry Coastguard, Llantwit Major Coastguard, Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Police, Rescue Helicopter 169 (from RAF Chivenor), and Barry Dock Lifeboat (due to the incoming tide).

The Rescue helicopter initially lowered the winch-man to the boy, but was unable to safely recover him, as he would not approach the winch-man.

A Coastguard and a Fire Service person were then lowered down the cliff, but again could not approach the boy as he kept moving and was reluctant to be rescued, even though his father was in contact with him from the beach.

A further two Fire Service personnel were lowered to provide assistance, and eventually the boy was safely lowered to the beach, to be reunited with his father.

Barry Dock Lifeboat provided essential lighting for the rescue as daylight faded.

The rescue operation took approx 5 hours, involving personnel from six services, costing many thousands of pounds. 2 Coastguard teams, 4 Fire Service teams, an Ambulance, Police, an all weather lifeboat, and an RAF rescue helicopter. Demonstrating excellent multi-agency team work, resulting in a successful rescue.

Request from Swansea Coastguard to investigate a report of a dog stranded in the Bulls Nose area (between Knap and Porthkerry). Barry Coastguard attended along with Barry Dock Lifeboat. The dog was located on Porthkerry Beach, and was reunited with the owner by the Coastguard. (Owner taken via road from Knap to Porthkerry beach)
